Ability Support 4 All is a community project that aimed to encourage those with poor ability, disabilities or struggle with general day-to-day tasks. Anybody who feels they would benefit from some gentle exercises can join in some structured sessions that will help to gradually increase mobility, fitness and confidence to exercise.
We invited 15 parents of our local community to join us for free once a week for 6 weeks to learn about nutrition and fitness and took part in a one hour structured and supervised gym session each week. Before the course began we invited all 15 mums to be weighed and measured before they started to learn about healthy eating and using the gym as and when they wanted with one supervised gym session by a personal trainer once each week During the educational setting we explained the importance of fitness and eating well to get the best out of life and how a poor diet and lifestyle can prevent you from feeling your best and will affect not only your physical health but your mental health too. We covered what carbs are, the types of fats we should be eating and what protein is and why we need it. We explained the different types of exercises that are performed in the gym and why we would participate in them. We also explained why intensity, duration and frequency of exercise is also important. Also explained throughout the six week course was how important recovery is and the long term benefits of remaining active and eating well. At the end of the 6 weeks we asked all participants to complete forms to tell us how they feel and all 15 participants said they felt better mentally and physically, they slept better and had enjoyed learning about the importance of exercise. They also said they are now starting to cook from fresh rather than rely on takeaways. The participants were weighed and measured before the six week course to see if they would lose any weight or inches and 100% of the participants had lost on average 11lbs of weight in 6 weeks, just by removing alcohol and cutting down on takeaway food and sugary snacks.
